While January takes it sweet time to wind down, I will take this opportunity to share the bit I've done to decorate my boy's rooms. I don't get much space, just the walls, and I know in a few years those will be off limits to me as they grow older and more picky. This dog canvas however is a fan favorite. I picked it up at T.J. Maxx in December and added the Dog & Boy vintage letters I brought home with me from Hunt & Gather in Minneapolis this September.

I've edited my vintage displays and changed out elements as the boys have grown; the cowboy pattern and plastic cowboy & horse figure, block and tin whistle and Modern Boy book have stayed for several years, they are just way, way too cool! The moon globe actually sits on a crater-like stand. It was in my booth way back until I realized I was never going to find another 1960's treasure like it, so it is staying, always. I grabbed the deposit sign also at Hunt & Gather for a steal while trolling through the basement with
my friend Celeste Shaw.

Ah, the pirate ship paint by number art! It is by far one of my most special pieces. I had three of them in one of my first booths at The Farm Chicks show in Fairfield. Two of Serena's youngest boys bought the other two (which I think they still have) and I decided to keep one for my boys. I love globes. They make any room look amazing, and are multipurpose because they are not only 3D art, but they are interactive too. I pick them up whenever I can find them for a decent price. My mid-century Space coloring book is in perfect condition, sorry boys, no coloring allowed in that one. And I ordered the white wood BOY letters three years ago when I was on bed rest with my youngest boy, with the intent to paint and hang them. As you can see they are still white but I love the differing fonts.

My boys begged for glass Ball jars this summer and since I always pick those up when I see them too, to use for anything and everything, I gave them a couple. They use them for marbles and saving up their coins. Old blocks always rock; these particular ones are numbered so I made a math problem out of them.

One of my favorite things to display as wall art is vintage and antique game boards, the colors are always bold and the graphics rock.

My business partner Jennifer (http://www.funkyjunkjennifer.blogspot.com/) knew I was looking for a new storage cabinet for my boy's room at our Fall Funky Junk show. So when she led me to this A-MA-ZING find, I immediately purchased it. The inside was clean and the shelves are orange and huge, so it holds all the necessary but messy looking things I want to hide in their room.

Moving on to my baby, who is now almost 3 1/2; I've filled his shelves with vintage letters and number finds and antique vehicles...

books and records and retro toys (special thanks to Robyn Pirie of Scout Vintage for Mr. Pony),

and way up high on his bookshelf is my awesome blue metal child's toy high chair and yellow squeaky giraffe, both of which I've had since my oldest was 1. The other giraffe was Finn's favorite chewing toy from Land of Nod, and the horse and rider was a toy of mine from the 70's. Funnily enough, giving credence to the phrase, it's a small world, I had spied this particular toy on a favorite blog of mine http://shabbyvintagejunk.blogspot.com/ written by a delightful lady in Australia!

A shelf of favs; a mix of reproduction (O Boy pop bottle flower and Do Not Disturb birdy sign) and vintage retro glory (fin card for my Finn boy from Hunt & Gather; plastic truck 49c tag and red and blue plastic toy oil truck). Finn has singlehandedly broken the most of my collections, so everything too special has to go up. Way up.

I moved the boys smaller white medicine cabinet from their room to the bathroom to accomplish two things: first and foremost, to put my amazing vintage bath inspired collections up and away from water and boys (a dangerous combination) and second to hide away a few things like scissors and band aids (again, you have no idea what boys can dream up when you think they are playing quietly).

The ducks are all vintage, the star clock is from Pottery Barn Kids 9 years ago, (we color matched the yellow for our former home's boys bathroom and I painted a cute dresser this yellow-which will be at Funky Junk Spring show in Spokane). I added the amazing packaged toothbrush that I've had as long as I've been junking, a crossing guard patch from Hunt & Gather (where you can hunt & gather super cool things!!) my wood blocks which actually I realized have double meaning put in a bathroom (not my real intent and I'm hoping the boys don't figure that out), a car hood ornament and oil cans from my summer farm pick.

Going up the stairs to the bedrooms is a wall where we decided to add a homework desk this fall. It has functioned perfectly, but the desk is 1970's wood and gold pulls so it is a painting project I will share this summer when the weather is painting worthy!

I hung this shelf and put my three favorite breakable vintage animals from my collection. Many had to go when we moved, but these three remained. I found the incredible 3 (like the incredible E I have in our TV room) from one of my favorite stylists/artists/Farm Chicks vendors/friends Nia Sayers of http://www.summerlandstyle.blogspot.com/. My vignette makes me smile and take a deep breath whenever the yellow and white wallpaper is on my last and I mean very last designing nerve.

An Update on the Update...

As January slowly winds to a close and we spend cold days inside our cozy home, I am taking down and packing away the remaining winter decorations that adorn my house. I thought it would be a good time to show you what I've accomplished this past year on our updating projects....not much. But each project my husband and I tackle (we've been watching ALOT of football in this boy-full home lately) feels like they make monumental differences. Maybe because we live with the old style so long, it just feels so good when we finally make a change!

I've featured this pic several times because it really is one of my favorite small scale/big impact projects I've done. It's in the kitchen eat in area, but you can see it from the front entry, and through our large window out front so that you can even see it as you drive up and walk up to the house. The basket is also for homework and papers due during the week, so it's really functional too. I love typography, vintage and new made letters and metal/wire baskets, so this combines so much of what I love; plus the sentiment is what it's all about for me: home sweet home.

Here is the infamous wallpaper in the bathroom inside our laundry room. It was a shock to my system and was one of the first things to go. One day last winter when I just couldn't take it anymore, I peeled if all off. Then in the fall, I sold the brown storage stand and....

The reveal!~I am just so happy with the how the color turned out on the walls. It is Brook Trout from the Martha Stewart collection at Home Depot, which we had color matched for the Behr paint my husband loves so much. The cabinet is one I purchased from my mom at the fall 2011 Funky Junk show. She had acquired it from our friend and fellow junker Ann Caster. Mom painted it, distressed it and added the mirrored birds. I just adore how it looks; and how it hides my bathroom necessities so prettily!

I still have my white painted antique frame perched on the 1970's vanity, which serves us fine for now. The simple metal and mirror storage actually has grown on me.

I love, love the Windex bottle my mom gave me last December for my birthday, quite a find!

And my old soaps in their amazing graphic packages (did I mention I love old advertising, packing and graphics!!) are in a vintage metal sink container, also a find from Ann. I do miss that lady.

The only projects left to do in this room are to either build or repurpose a wood cabinet around the great sink and replace the faucet, or to replace the sink with an entirely new vanity set. What do you think?

Oh, and obviously replace the flooring (which to my dismay, extend all through the kitchen and eating area). Flooring in the entire house (except for the four bedrooms my darling mom got us new carpet for as housewarming gift) is our number 1 priority. Just is also the most expensive, disruptive and labor and time intensive, so it keeps getting pushed down the list.

Moving up to my master bedroom, I had this chalkboard and white painted antique frame left from my last show, and I decided it would be perfect to frame the lovely 2012 calendar from the talented Barbara Schriber, also from the fall show! http://www.barbaraschriberdesigns.com.

One of Mark and my favorite projects this past year has been our chalkboard wall in our eat in kitchen area. We framed out the entire painted wall with old wood rulers (another fav. collection of mine)...

...as well as the all house retro radio/speaker command center in the middle of the wall. I post our weekly schedule old school style in chalk so there is no missing what's up for the week.

In our TV room, the MOST distressful (not distressed, which would be a good thing) room of all, I have a collection of all white vintage E's. We've added another large lower case "e" since this picture, thanks to http://www.funkyjunkjennifer.blogspot.com. We also have had a few brainstorms for the room which we will be super excited to start on and showcase later this year. We hope.

My kitchen/eating area has a wall that is shared with the living room, and for now, I like the wall. I don't enjoy not being able to join in conversations during get-togethers, but the wall holds three large cabinets of storage space and for now, that is priceless. It also is the perfect space to display some of my favorite vintage finds, like this sign...

and this green antique shelf filled with some of my favorite kitchen collection items.

Our floor to ceiling rock fireplace, which apparently you can spray with water and it will grow moss, is loved by some and not by others. Thankfully we love it because it is a home improvement project far too large for now. I have three E's on the three ledges and rotate out decorations depending on my mood and the season. The best part of the fireplace?...

A real fire warming our holidays and winter nights...

A Silent Night

Merry Making

I've been weighing what is important this year, this season, this month. Deciding what is really worth my time and attention, especially after losing a week to the stomach flu.

Now that it is almost the Night Before Christmas....

And our home is decorated,

The stockings are hung (but not filled yet)...

And old traditions are mixed with new.

I've been baking treats for Christmas Eve and Day...

Holding my "deer" ones close...

and filling our home with wonder, working on seeing Christmas through the eyes of a child.

And on Christmas Eve you will find me gathered with my family and others celebrating the birth of the Child who's eyes I most need to see with.

In the meantime, this December I was priveleged to spend time with junking friends at the Two Women Vintage Christmas Show in Spokane.

My mom and I had so much fun decorating our booth,

finding decorating inspiration...

displaying our finds...

getting our Christmas creativity going.

We've found this show to be a wonderful gateway to December,

a way to finish up our gift list, meet new friends and hug treasured ones.

We were so grateful for that first weekend of December that lit up our month.

On my birthday weekend, my sweet mom took me to Sweet Frostings in downtown Spokane.

It was a sweet visit indeed, to see Judy the owner and creator and her son...

to enjoy the festive and bright holiday decor and shop the fun product selection...

to see the clever and creative decor crafted by Gladys and Celia Hanning of Junebug Furniture and Design Co.,

and of course, to eat my favorite Salted Carmel cupcake and pick up some handmade marshmallows too!!

Mom, along with my sisters and dad, also took me to Pink, in downtown Spokane,

the must-go-to store for all things vintage, decor and just plain fun and inspiring.

This year her tree was decked in natural twigs,

vintage beads, and topped with a crown made at The Royal Lady Workshop by Elaine Tolson this summer.

She has a way of making you feel you've been somewhere very special...

Junk Bonanza, My Midwest Dream

There it was, all the goodness of Midwest junking finds gathered into a rambling building just waiting for me to find my way through the treasure hunt. Mingled with the excited murmur of fellow early birds and the faint waft of donut holes to lure me further, I was more than ready. This & sign, by the way, is the one thing I regret not finding a way to get home with me.

Thanks to The Creative Connection event last year in 2010, and a vintage bus that took us from downtown Minneapolis to Junk Bonanza in nearby Shakopee, MN ( I still can't say it right, but I love trying), we were hooked. My generous mom got us Early Bird tickets this year, so we wouldn't miss a minute. It didn't matter that we had to get up early, all jet lagged from Spokane, WA, or that we had to pay an enormous cab fee this year. We. were. there!

While we were getting ready for our Junk Bonanza day of joy in our hotel rooms that cool September morning, we caught a piece on the show on a local channel, with Ki showing us around before we even got in. This amazing sign was one thing my mom really wished she could have brought home with her. Not carry on size however.

It is hard to adequately describe the feeling that Junk Bonanza is. It IS rightly touted as "The Best Junk Roundup in the Midwest". Okay, so while it is the only show I've been to in the Midwest, I have no doubt of the truth of that tag line posted on the http://www.junkbonanza.com/ website.

And now, for a few pictures of some of my favorite eye candy displays of some of my favorite junk....

This cool tool box was even cooler when I discovered it also opens in the front. It will be holding some of my scrapbooking supplies in my soon (please, please) to be completed mommy cave.

I had to bring this home with me, since two of my boys are riding the bus this year. I love how someone added their own school district to boot. And the price, did I mention the a-ma-zing Midwest prices?!?

A new decoration for my laundry room bathroom display.

I am currently enamored with clocks and watch and clock faces, these have been the perfect addition to my vintage seasonal displays!

These two gems are both on display, one in my boys room, and one in the media room.

My mom, Christy and I each snapped up one of these, Christy may have ended up with two. Love.

I wish I would have bought way more of these bus passes!! (Especially after I saw the ones Christy got!)

Hunt and Gather, which is another day's post, also had a booth at the show, but I'm pretty sure I got the Sunbeam bread pocket protector from the actual store, and these tags from J.B.

Love me some coffee and love me some retro coffee bags, one for me, and one for my designer coffee drinking sister. (The town my grandparent's lived in had a Red Rooster restaurant.)

And my favorite coffee mug this fall, straight from the Junk Revolution Junk Bonanza store. I am drinking out of it right now as I write, as well as inhaling a box of white chocolate covered Oreos.

I loved spending the time at Junk Bonanza with my mom and our friends, but for me, the

Midwest will always be associated with the first person who told me of this far off land, filled with barns and farms full of "farm fresh" junk (as the American Pickers like to call it).

I met Ann Caster in the spring of 2004 at a life changing show called The Farm Chicks Antique Show (http://www.thefarmchicks.com/). That fall I was thrilled to be a vendor at that very same show, and visited Ann again. Every Farm Chicks since and around the amazing circuit of shows in our Eastern Washington/North Idaho area, I had the privilege of visiting with Ann, receiving her down to earth advice, enjoying her full laugh and sense of humor, and drooling over her booths. The first vintage furniture I bought was a enamel top, wood legged white on white farm table that I use and will always use in my office, and I bought it from Ann's Nestting booth. My sister Heidi loved working with Ann to design and build her website, my mom loved sharing stories with Ann at every show, and Jennifer and I were blessed when Ann was a vendor at Funky Junk for several years.

Yesterday, I along with Heidi and mom, had the honor of paying our respects to this incredible woman at her funeral. Ann has left a very big hole in this corner of the world, as all who knew her will attest. Her husband Andy and her were partners, truly in marriage and in life, and he was by her side at every show, in the decade of her antiquing business.

Andy's brother told a story at the funeral that illustrated this very obvious fact. (I hope I can do it justice.)

Shortly after Ann passed away last week, Andy got in the car to drive to Montana, but he just kept driving. Every year, Andy and Ann took "antique runs" back to the Midwest, side by side in the car, she in the right side passenger seat, usually in her big coat and hat, as the cancer grew. On this drive, as he drove late into the night, Andy eventually put down his coat on the passenger side and then his hat which laid on top of his coat, that was standing up on the seat. Soon, Andy saw Ann. While he knew it was the reflection of his coat and hat in the dashboard, he felt her presence as if she was there. And he could here her saying, just like she did many times; "Andy, it's time to find a place to stop and eat and stay, we've gone over 700 miles, and I'm tired and hungry." And then he remembered Ann's last words to him, "I will never leave you; I will always be on your right side."

I have no doubt she was and will be.

There wasn't a dry eye, or an untouched person to be found in the church yesterday as her brother in law related Andy's story.

You will be greatly missed Ann. I hope that I can be half the junker/antiquer/wife/woman you were.

Falling for Fall

It may have taken a month longer than usual here in the heart of the Inland Northwest, Spokane, WA...but when autumn finally arrived, it was spectacularly so.

In the last week of October when the cold snap hit, all the neighborhood deciduous trees changed from green to vibrant oranges, yellows and reds.

Previously, Mark and I had planted maples and oaks at our new build home, where for a decade we watched them grow and flourish and give a show like no other every fall.

Our new/old home has many stately evergreens, but alas, very few leafy trees...so have found ourselves on a treasure hunt this year, our first fall in this place.

Every day on the way to the bus stop Liam and Finn and I collected some of the hugest (yes, I just used that word) leaves we'd ever seen, to display in our home. These, I stuck into one of metal frogs in my favorite Made in Western Germany crystal bowl.

These, we decided to lay in, just for fun. So, while the boys have had to borrow a neighbors lawn for jumping into leaf piles, we have still found ways to revel in the autumn.

My vintage metal rake collection is not only for display this year, they actually work far better than the newer plastic rakes for piling up pine needles!

Halloween Unwrapped & A Giveaway...

October has come and gone, and taking with it our first Halloween in our new home...

We moved in November 2010, so this year we loved getting to decorate inside and out...

My multipurpose Mr. Owl guarded the garden in summer and perches on the porch in fall.

A vintage Halloween party invite brought orange and black in my kitchen.

Inspired by a pack of tags I bought, I scoured my stash and turned two antique bottles...

Into spooky decor.

I love, love these Wendy Addison Parlour Magic alphabet discs; I've had the set for years and keep finding

new ways to use them.

The weekend of Halloween, the boys and I added our faux black cobwebs around the house and

by the front door, to make little Owl more festive.

My entry way greeting; vintage wallpaper was included in the home.

My 3 year old size blow-mold ghost & pumpkin greeted trick or treaters.

Happy reproduction cooky cutters from Restoration Hardware...

And one light up pumpkin man in the family room to warm the night.

This year felt the most like a good old fashioned Halloween to me; decorations, candy, dressing up and trick or treating our neighborhood as a family.

And since I feel like it, and I'm all hopped up on candy corn, let's throw in a little giveaway...

For Halloween I dressed up as a "Flea Market Princess"...(translated, it was what I could pull together out of my closet, and I love junk.)

just in time for Back to School...

For two cute boys; the other one gets to spend the days with Mama.

Funky Junk Vendor Profile & Giveaway!!

It's almost time again, for vendors to load up trailers and pick ups, Uhauls and vans, and bring them bursting (I speak from experience) full of treasures, finds and creations to Funky Junk fall in Sandpoint, ID. (http://www.funkyjunkantiqueshow.com/ ) It is a privelege for Jennifer and I to work alongside so many talented and generous vendors, here are just two of the 30....

One of the vendors who will be traveling up to Funky Junk fall is Coquille Gallagher, of Coquille Vintage. She has been hitting the junking trail for well over a decade, and is skilled and well versed in so many genres. She calls herself a "carpentress" and has lately added to her repretoire designing and building work stations, like the amazing blue one you will see in my Joy Harvest booth.

Coquille is someone who cares very much about every piece, and it shows. She designs, repurposes, reupholsters, paints, repairs, and rebuilds almost everything in her booths.

This is Coquille's second time at Funky Junk, her booth in the spring wowed us, and we expect great things from her this again!

One of our longest attending vendor, and all around favorite people is Robyn Pirie, the curator and owner of the fabulous Scout. The pieces I have bought from her are still among my favorites, and I've seen some of the incredible finds she is bringing this time to Sandpoint...her booth is not to miss!

Her design asthetic is spot on, and she is extremely knowledgeable about her vintage clothing, jewlery and carefully picked pieces for the home. Her booth is a perrennial (or bi-annual, well, anyway, a twice yearly) fan and vendor favorite. This is one of the many gorgeous displays in her home.

I think Robyn mentioned creating something with this fantastic tin celing tile to bring to Funky Junk fall....hmmm.... Make sure you take some time to linger in Scout's booth and enjoy every single booth and vendor, and we'll see you very soon!!

Camping, Retro Style

This summer, we decided that with the addition of our dog that our camping trip would happen at home, in our back yard, and that we would day trips around Spokane and our neighborhood. We took a long hike both mornings, swam in the afternoon, once in the river (Haden only) and the next day at our neighborhood pool. We slept in tents in our very treed backyard and cooked and ate outside, and allowed no technology, except our phones, which we mostly ignored.

So off we went, hiking at a local favorite spot...

And after, Mark, the boys and Rudy plunging in the cold of the Spokane River under the Bowl and Pitcher foot bridge...a welcome reward after a two hour hike. Finn enjoyed throwing rocks, and I love the feel of the sand under my toes.

The super cool vintage cowboy chairs I picked up this spring just for camping...

And, Haden using the vintage chairs in a way the designers never imagined...some sort of Star Wars flyer action. The boys also thought they were footrests.

Liam eating a smore, which we did both nights of camping, over our fire pit. Being that Haden has food allergies, we modified the boys smores and used Enjoy Life brand chocolate bars, Enjoy Life crunchy Honey Graham round cookies and an assortment of marshmallowss (He was allergic to beef so we used fish gelatin marshmallows for 7 years-he and we think they taste better!) We also cooked our hot dogs over the fire to make it feel more like camping.

The retro cot I kept from my junking this year turned out to be a fabulous way to lounge the afternoon away in the yard. Of course, with three little boys, lounging lasts about 15 minutes and Cot-scapades takes up the rest of the time.

The awesome book the boys and I read on the cot together. They badly want a camper now, more than ever.

Stargazing at the backyard sky. The boys loved seeing the stars "pop out" as it dusk turned to inky sky. We used a stargzing chart to find constellations, Liam (our 5 year old) thought we got to actually find animals in the sky like the pictures in our book illustrated, but we did find some wonder.

Mark found his old card games to entertain the boys while I cleaned up Rudy's inside carpet mess from the day before (the one time we left him to go swimming). Definetly the more fun choice, Mark.

So, the last morning, the boys learned to play old school card games with Daddy before we broke our backyard camp.

This is what it's all about; little hands connecting with the real outdoors. Little people connecting with big people, without distractions. And big people learning to breathe again.

Where Do Women Create?...

The day just sounded to good to be true, crown making, food, and time to just create...I jumped at the chance to attend the Boho Retreat this late July. I know many women have special spaces to create; my mom for one has a beautiful one. We love to peruse Where Women Create http://www.wherewomencreate.com/ as well, and someday I hope to have such a space, but in the meantime, often it takes me physically leaving my home to go and recharge my creativity.

I loved the chalkboard signs leading the way to a day of creating at The Royal Lady Workshop, hosted by Elaine Tolson of Vintage Charm & Boho Retreats, at her beautiful farm just an hour north of Spokane, WA. http://tinkerverve.wordpress.com/2011/08/01/bohostyle-crown-making-and-picnicking/

The welcome table, complete with cute vintage accessories and our swag bags with Bobbi Brown makeup samples; a yummy cookie mix from Heather of Farmgirl Gourmet; and homemade goats milk soap from Elaine. What a way to make a girl feel welcome!

The clotheslines pinned with vintage aprons made a fun border for our creative retreat.

The whole setting was so relaxing and refreshing, the lawn, the trees, the quilts, the breeze...and these Ball jars hanging with delicious raspberry cuttings from Elaine's raspberry patch.

Where has the Time gone??

Is it truly the last week of July?...My oh my how summer has flown by. I feel like trying to capture it before it whisks away. Maybe because we have had such cool temperatures, and our family has had such a low key summer I feel that way.

I haven't been out and about much this summer, we've been hanging close to home, but I was able to get to Cake this past weekend...a glorious display of vintage-ness there!

My friends Jill, birthday girl Amy (her first time at Chaps/Cake-oh yes, she'll be back) and me after a yummy birthday breakfast. Thanks for taking our pic, Miss Celeste!!

I managed to get my display of Expo '74 (and a few Seattle World's Fair pieces too) up this summer... one project done...too many to count that will now have to wait for late fall & winter...

My collection of go to canning jars in my office, awaiting the next summer party...

I've been able to get to few and far between garage/yard/estate sales this summer, but got to go to one of my favorite neighborhood sales with my mom in early July, where I found some pretties...

This is the inside of a trunk I picked up at another neighborhood sale...ah summer junking! Can't wait to get to the fun stuff I've been stashing in my garage to ready and bring to Funky Junk Labor Day weekend in Sandpoint!

And the big reason we are home bound, sleep deprived and behind on all projects at our house; our rescue dog, Rudy, a four year old (going on two) lab/retriever mix. Our oldest had been saving a year for a dog to call his own. Now Mark and I are doing most of the work so Haden can have his boyhood dream. We all adore him, we're just ready to get back to some sort of new calm sometime soon.

a Grand 4th

I hope your Fourth of July was a happy, safe and refreshing one. While we may not have dressed in patriotic garb and re-enacted a pivotal moment in American history, (and I frankly couldn't pass the new citizen test if I had to), we managed to have a good time honoring this holiday celebrating freedom. Among those who gathered at my parent's home, (my dad's siblings, my sisters, my sister's husband and parents, my boys, my husband, his dad, and a farm neighbor), there were five military veterans.

After arriving and greeting, I gave my mom her Fourth of July gifts, including this reproduction glittery poster. We're a gift giving and happily gift receiving family for just about every holiday. We even make some up. We do skip Groundhog Day.

Every holiday, I must walk through my mom and dad's house to look for my mother's incredible displays and decorations. This year I found some fun items I hadn't seen before, including these two books.

Where did this amazing Uncle Sam wind spinner come from? I admired him in all his red, white and blue vintage glory.

After a long day of sun and play, we headed home with cupcakes sent by Oma in my lap.

We arrived home at dusk, all ready for a marshmallow roast with our neighbors. The essentials...huge and medium marshmallows in my vintage Pyrex bowl; skewers (not sticks this year, though we had plenty in the yard to draw from) and waving flags displayed in one of my many prized old Ball jars.

Freedom comes at a high price, at the cost of many. That is a fact not lost on me. And this year, I held that thought a little closer, thankful for the way paved for me and my family to celebrate that in the comfort and safety of friends and family.

There are many rustic, history-holding brick buildings in Spokane, WA. This one is on the Spokane Registry of Historic Buildings. This one was orginally Pacific Hide and Fur. This one now holds a treasure trove of finds and friendships.

A few weeks back, on Father's Day, when the menfolk went off in search of an action movie; my mom, sisters and I peeked through the windows of the soon to be unvieled Pink.

How much is that vintage toy telephone in the window?

This place recreates window shopping into an art form!

The window goodness goes all the way up to the front door...

It's official! They are open for your pleasure!

My mom got there early; I got there later than I was supposed to. But here is her incredible find. The cart and the basket are making their way to her kitchen. Even cooler, the cart was in a Flea Market Style photo shoot. I personally love the vintage linoleum piece under the cart!

Oh the choices!!

These were the particular stamps I purchased, my mom went home with several more...stilll kind of wishing I'd bought the ICED and the 8for1 and the Sara Lee...

I simply had to take this home with me! I found out it was Celeste's, who had originally bought it from Nancy of Forget Me Not in Coeur d' Alene. I always end up with either of their amazing items, one way or another!

I know! I love it! I'm going to keep the boys crayon boxes on it in the living room for easy access for coloring...and display some of my vintage crayon box collection too. The back of the display has a chart for proper display on each shelf. Love it.

My last buy of the day...I had no idea these even existed! But "Barbie was bursting with excitement-she had won a world trip as a prize! She told her diary all about it..." Now I need to find a Tru-Vue Stereo Viewer!

Oh, well, we love Pink! And all that other stuff too=).

Home Sweet House Warming

W wanted to say a big thank you, after our big move this past year...

My theory...

What a year it has been...my housewarming party was postponed from December until now...

And it was finally time; our house we had purchased in October; moved into in November; and had had a huge tree fall on in the same week we moved in (as a welcome to our neighborhood?) was finally starting to feel like a home.

Our old house sold in April, on Good Friday, the repairs on our current house were finally. all. done. Well, except for that pesky tub faucet pouring out brown water when we turn it on. But whatever. We were just ready to celebrate and thank our friends and family.

It started with an invitation...

A toast of sorts to all those whose love, support and prayers helped us through a long and surprising season of change.

And then, a party!

My tall apothecary jar (a housewarming gift from my mom) filled with all of my vintage picnic cutlery collection. The great Rainbo set on top of my Thermos is from Funky Junk Jennifer. They both know me well.

The spread: the idea was simple to make and easy to eat foods; and they all had to be allergen friendly for Haden, my oldest little guy. So we kept it wheat, dairy (except for one dip option), egg, and nut free. And everyone was happy.
Note: Mark cut the awesome rulers around our retro intercom system to display cities we knew (including Yakima where Mark grew up) and a radio advertising ruler. I know, cool.

The crowning project for our party was my chalkboard wall; right behind where the boys eat morning, noon and night. I dreamed it; Funky Junk Jennifer threw in the yardstick idea and Mark, my beloved, put in the labor to make it a reality. I love it, morning, noon and night!!

Just before the party I finally found a spot to display one of my all time favorite vintage finds. I bought it for an unbelievable price ($5!?!) at a Hurd Mercantile garage sale I happened upon once upon a time. Love those crazy girls!

My happy display of finds from Farm Chicks this year! The Colored Chalk from The Vintage Rabbit, the crazy cool 3 from Nia of Summerland Style; and the cute giveaway telephone from Fun Junk on the west side of the state. The great vintage soda pop bottle said; "Why have you been trying to sell me for so long when I clearly belong with you?".

I really love my pink and green scale. Mom had purchased it for me at Today's Country Store in Sumner, WA way back when, and it has followed me around ever since. And I do love birthdays.

Effervescent display near the drink area...love the pink scoop set from my mom at my birthday and the pink straws are recycled from my sister's birthday party.

The vintage glass, a long time companion in my collection; the vintage ice cream tub picked up from The Farm Chicks Store; and the cute ice cream box from Carol of Marketplace Gifts at the Funky Junk show in Sandpoint, ID last fall!

Amazing box now on display in my kitchen; gifted to me from the dear Funky Junk Jennifer!

(My mom and I have determined that it was lard that made my Grandma Kuchenbuch's sugar cookies uncopiable...that and love and years of experience.

Vintage seed packets on display, perhaps to make up for my unplanted garden and flowers this year, thus far. The wet weather did save us from some yard work for the party and showed us what a great party house we have!

I had alot of fun stamping the night before. The lower right of the paper has the date 61811 stamped with my vintage stamp.

I'll tour you through my bathrooms, all in various states of before and after another day.
Exciting stuff!

This awesome framed E on vintage linoleum was lovingly carried back on carry-on luggage by my mom from Junk Bonanza in Minnesota last September. Now it resides on our huge lava rock fireplace. People either love it or don't. The fireplace that is. We love it.

Let me tell you how much I love those three cuties in the frame...and I loved getting to decorate the Ikea computer desk fresh with some of my prized vintage finds!

Some of my very favorite vintage games on display in our entertainment/TV room...

My happy E wall in our TV room. The oh so retro paneling will be painted some year. That room actually needs HGTV'd.

Take home bags for the kiddos; sidewalk chalk and bubbles, which we were supposed to be doing during the party, however it poured rain the whole time and the kids were left to fend for themselves in the crazy land called "The Playroom". (One child came up and told me, "It's madness down there!")
It was such a treat to greet and talk with and celebrate with so many...we only wish we could have managed to schedule on a magical day when everyone from near and far could have come!

And finally, parting candy treat bags for our guests of all ages.

Our party was loaded with sweet moments...

sweet family and neighbors and friends with sweet blessings...

And of course, dessert, sweet dessert...our wheat/dairy/egg free cupcakes!!

What a sweet weekend it was!

Miles of wonderful places to rest your gaze; booth after booth full of inspiration and smiling faces...ahh, Farm Chicks!

There were sweet finds everywhere, and treats to boot! Mom, my friend Christy/Ballyhoo Girl and I had such a great time meeting and greeting and visiting with everyone. I love the people that Farm Chicks brings together. I told my mom there was nowhere I'd rather be than right there at the Fairgrounds; I appreciated each conversation and every friend.

So, the things you saw at Farm Chicks in both Funky Junk Jennifer and Funky Junk Hollie's booths, those were just a preview of our Labor Day show to come...okay, so Jennifer's booth was so incredible and mine had some of the best junk ever, but really, we and our vendors have all summer long to get ready for Labor Day...just imagine!

The "e" I scavenged from my mom's stash of letters...it's perfect for the boys playroom, which eventually will have white walls and red thrown in for good measure. The old small kitchen island holding the e is also from mom and going in my office (tip: pack up time is a reallly good time to ask for things/go make bargains with very tired vendors, wink, wink).

The AMAZING set of lockers I picked up at one of my new favorite booths-The Old School House. I loved every bit of that booth in Bay 4...talented lady that Stacy! I want to put the lockers in my oldest boys room; the reason I loved this set is because my boys cannot lock each other inside. And because they are white!! and not too tall and well, I'm in love.

Saying goodbye to a dear, amazingly talented, sweet and all around wonderful person, Kristin Dobson (Sophia's). I went to her moving sale last weekend to ease some of my Farm Chicks homesickness, and to make sure I got a hug. I walked away with a snowblower-Mark was pretty happy. The Funky Junk family will miss Kristin and her incredible spirit, her family, and her booth very, very much! Now I have an excuse to find a way to visit down South! Blessings to her and her family!!

When the lovely Hurd Mercantile girls offered this week to hand out some of our Funky Junk Save the Date tags for our Labor Day show in Sandpoint, ID, I decided it was finally time to take a day trip with my mom to Rockford, just outside of the Spokane Valley.

Mom and I loved shopping around, and the boys loved running up and down the stairs; yes, two floors of shopping fun!!

The Doris Day coloring book purchased from my booth, perfectly displayed=)!

Right next door in the grand wine room is a treat; it's full of a really fun assortment of wines, including this Backroads Palouse bottle, side by side with vintage toy trucks; all of which my boys thought were "awesome" and wanted to take home.

Want. Pink. Rotary. Phone. There was also a blue, a mixed teal and black, and I think another one I'm missing. There are awesome vintage finds at Hurd!

My sweet & strong little Liam holding my winning Facebook gift from the Hurd Merc. girls! Two, count them two, huge Martha Stewart books-The New Classics Cookbook and The Encyclopedia of Crafts...and a cute red bow!

The over the top adorable perfect gift my mom bought for me at Hurd Merc. She showed it to me, said: you need this in your office, don't you, I said breathlessly: oh my goodness yes, it's the exact color scheme,and perfect everything!!

So, while parting Farm Chicks is such sweet sorrow (paraphrased), I'm grateful for the creative people I get to continue to share with; through blogs, Facebook, face time, and memories.

A Sweet Birthday Party

It all started with an invitation to my my middle sister's birthday party; what follows are pics of that beautiful event...that girl knows how to throw a party!

Heidi designed her incredible birthday party invites; I've learned to expect nothing short of the best from our Funky Junk graphic designer!

Oh, the divine cake! The centerpiece of any birthday party~hers are always made by Alison, the incredible vegan desert baker at Mizuna restaurant in Spokane; and yes, it tasted as amazing as it looked!

Happy Mother's Day~

I had two of the most beautiful, giving, loving Grandma's a girl was ever blessed to have. My dad's mom was Martha; my mom's mother was Juanita. That's Juanita holding me by the windmill on her farm. When I lost my grandma's, one to cancer and one to an accident, I lost not only a generation but prayer warriors, amazing bakers, encompassing huggers, and unconditional love like only a grandma can give.

My mom and I; sharing our love of junk & cupcakes...in so many ways, I am my mother's daughter. I love you, Mom.

These are three of the books I picked up today at a yard sale...happy finds for Mother's Day weekend, especially the colorful Betty Crocker Cookbook on the left; my Grandma Johnson had the exact same one and this is the first one I've ever found out junking.

When I was looking through some papers this week, I came across something I had written and made into a scrapbook for my mom. After my Grandma & Grandpa Johnson's accident a decade ago, I started, with my mom's help, to collect sayings of my grandma's. You know, those things that she said that made her her. Looking at the list it amazes me how many my sisters, mom and I still use, so I added comments in italics. What follows is that compilation...

She lit up a room when she walked in, and lit up you when you walked in her room. the things she said stayed with you, and it wasn't just the saying that said, but the charming way she said it. Sometimes I can still see her smile curve and her voice laugh as she said...

Bloomsday, May Day

Happy May Day, and Happy Bloomsday in Spokane, WA!! Sometimes it is really cool to be part of something big, something bigger than the everyday, something that shows you what you are made of. This spring my 8 year old has been participating in Bloomsday training at school and I told him I would do Bloomsday with him. That said, I was highly apprehensive, for both of us. I wasn't sure how we would do, if we could make it. But we showed up at our starting group Lilac (second from the end) for the 35th annual 12K (7.46 mile) race.

It could not have been a more perfect weather day for the race. After all of the snow, hail, sleet, rain, and storms of the past month, this May Day was gorgeous! And the trees even showed off.

Haden at the Bloomsday tradeshow where you pick up your numbers and can get free things. Haden's big prize was this pop. And his Franz donuts hat, which he said he would like to never stop wearing, even for sleeping.

Nothing but blue skies smiling at us...not a cloud in the sky for miles and miles!

Our "D" tags-so cool that our time can be tracked literally from start to finish; can't wait to see our time!

Ah...the trees in "bloom" in Downtown Spokane on May Day.

We enjoyed seeing the Union Jack and someone later on the course carrying the Stars and Stripes along with a Marines flag the whole way.

People leave their unneeded jackets in the trees and on the sides of the road for the Bloomsday crews to pick up later and donate. I like it! At the watering stations, they also used cups that we could throw on the ground, and the crews will pick them up and compost them! Impressive problem solving!

The thrilling start line!!

On our way to the start line! I was so impressed with the way Bloomsday has improved since the last time I participated. Everything is so organized, and groups are spread out, so it was a pleasure to run and walk, not crazy crowded. I think the last time I was in Bloomsday, was, ahem, over 20 years ago. Yikes!

Haden's Bloomsday Training after school program really paid off. He was in great shape for the race and really set the pace for us the whole time. I, not in the best shape after this rough winter, could not have made it in such good time without Haden's leading! Or made it at all.

Love the Free Hugs people. Thanks to all who encouraged along the way!

One of my most memorable, proud moments of the race: Haden said he'd rather run up Doomsday Hill. Incredulous, and mostly not believing we could, I agreed. And we did it. He kept us jogging from the bottom of the hill to the Vulture at the top! This sign reads "Doomsday Hill Ahead. No Detours."

We ran from when we found out we had already passed the 7 mile marker (thanks kind stranger!) to the Finish Line. Such a great reminder of what a glimpse of glory can do!

We finished!!! After crossing the finish line; tired and proud. We finished, and finished well.

The prize: a 2011 shirt. It says to everyone, I finished! Spokane will be a sea of yellow tomorrow. The iconic Clock Tower in the background.

Haden playing on the 'dinosaur bone' in a children's play area in Riverfront Park. The sculpture is set to be removed from the park after having been a fixture since Expo time. I love that Haden ran to the play area after only a brief moments rest on a bench. I limped there.

Keep Calm & Marry On

In anticipation of the Royal Wedding tomorrow (also my youngest sister's birthday-Happy Birthday Princess=)!!) I thought I would share a few of the finds my mom returned home with from her recent trip abroad.

These are my socks, Kate engagement ring and crown necklace...yes I will be dressing up for the royal occasion.
My mom and dad took a trip to England, France and Scotland...they had some built in family to visit and by all accounts had a very sweet trip indeed.

This bag is so perfect!...The colors, the design...love it! So pretty British.

My mom brought me my very own vintage English primer...and a Liberty of London pencil...

How fun would this be for a Royal Wedding party! Love the cupcake set especially, of course. The Rooster bread box is one of my sister's vintage finds from years back at Farm Chicks-she gifted it to my mom, who has had a rooster/chicken collection forever, thanks to her grandma Kuchenbuch's collecting. It goes way back, this collecting thing!

Quite love this little bowl she found by "PIP Studios-happy products for happy people" I also loved all of the Cadbury Mini Eggs in the bowl...

Cute patterned tray from Liberty of London...while we get bits and pieces of it at Target, but there is a whole, huge store filled with goodies in England!

Mom brought back some finds from Paris to sell at Funky Junk; these are some of the old Paris postal box keys and numbers she brought back for me and my sisters.

Vintage is the new modern across the ocean, as well!

I think she may have spent all of her pennies...or pounds.

A pillow that my mom picked up, remarkably, not in London, but on Overstock.com.

I think that I will just have to settle for Keep Calm & Eat A Cupcake...
These were my concoctions for my Easter boys.

After the Royal Wedding Day, I will be heading up to the Five Mile Prairie Grange for an amazing Tag Sale/Rummage Sale, put together by Serena Thompson, Farm Chick.

There will be a grange full of girls with there assorted junk...sounds like the perfect way to spend a day!! Funky JUnk Jennifer will be there, among others, and is bringing a truckload. I am bringing a bit of everything..and I have no doubt that everyone will find something! My only hope is to make money, not spend it all (I have a feeling...) and bring home less than I bring to sell (I have a feeling, though...)=)

Earth Day, Easter Day

I find it interesting that this year Earth Day and Easter Day fall on the same weekend. One day celebrating the perfect sacrifice of the One who created the Earth, for his creation; the other celebrating the creation's imperfect sacrifices to save the Earth formed by the Creator. I count myself among the imperfect with imperfect sacrifices; and what follow are just small ways I visibly celebrate both. Not everything, not the depth of my beliefs, just some of the fun ways.

I wasn't going to even decorate for Easter, feeling like Easter Sunday Worship would be enough and still trying to regain my energy and spirit after Funky Junk two weeks ago; but I decided to, and for my boy's reactions alone, I am glad I did. I had fun setting these happy little candles in a super sparkly Made in Western Germany bowl I picked up before Funky Junk. Liam, my middle guy, jumped up and down and told me that they are his friends.

An amazing set of Tavern candles, which came in the original green box, given to me by my mom. My littlest, Finn, kept screeching that he "found the eggs" when he saw these out.

Love the colors on Mr. Bunny (as Liam named him) and the postcard. And the bunny and angel kneeling at the Cross candle, was quite a find by my mom.

Two vintage honeycomb ducks and one nested chick.

Two of my vintage Easter themed sheet music pieces. Growing up, I was assigned to play a piano solo at church every Easter. Major stage fright made each and every time a catastrophe of nerves. I'm sure it was a great growing experience and paved the way for being on the stage of real life, but I'm so relieved to be in the pew and not on the piano bench for now! An amazing holiday party book is in the center-I think I saw a reproduction of it at Atticus in Spokane.

There are so many choices to be made any more, paper or plastic, organic or local, recycled or vintage...It's a good thing, really! And the next generation will have more choices than ours. I like fresh air, clean water, natural grass and non-toxic food...so I take small steps, within my means of time, energy & finances to help those things be available for my family & me, and others. I just liked the thought of this product I saw at Costco.

I love to buy organic or fresh local food, when it's possible in my budget~at the very least I go for organic apples for my boys...and maybe on less broke months, this looks like a great choice!! I found this brand at Costco.

"Junk is the new green" was one of our Funky Junk slogans some shows back; really, is there anything more fun than reducing, reusing, or rescuing just by shopping!? Well, at least to me.
I picked this white board up at my own garage sale from my sister and promptly sold my wood one. What a happy circle!

I tend to get easily overwhelmed with big problems, like saving the earth for one, so just focusing on the good I am doing, as small as it seems, helps. Recycling cans is such an easy-peasy step; and I get extra grocery money out of it most of the time! Same for our daily newspaper.

My little Finn helping take the Small Steps toilet paper upstairs, roll by roll. This is one of the happy accident, earth-friendly products I stumbled into when there were free coupons months back; now I buy it because I actually like it.

Haden's very own tree, planted in our first backyard. His Opa brought it to him from his property; it was the hardest thing for Haden to leave at our old house and he was very happy to get a picture with it. Good thing Lowes is giving away free trees for Earth Day this weekend!

We will miss our beautiful tree climbing Flowering (pink) Cherry this spring. We planted eight decidious trees at our first home; planting them in our second home's yard is a goal of ours. We have plenty of evergreens, by the way...including the logs from the one that fell on our house.

My three littlest (and biggest) blessings actually posing on their own in front of our SOLD house sign!! After 7 months of being on the market, it is so, so good to have one garage door opener again. Best thing, though, we've already moved-all the relief, none of the stress.

Get on the road...just 15 minutes north of the Y in Spokane, WA...take Newport Hwy (which becomes Hwy 2)...Follow Hwy 2 and take the Elk-Chattaroy Rd. turn (at the Solid Waste Transfer Station, yes really)...Veer right onto Big Meadows Rd; go 3 miles and you are there!!!

We'll have our pink and white signs out to lead the way to junking paradise...

Scored this perfect e (for eastman) for the boys playroom at Unified Groove Merchants in Spokane, on Monroe St. Awesome price, and even better it's from an old Shell gas station, which I think are now extinct in this area. Gas + boys= love.

My favorite coffee can, it is rusty inside, but the graphics, oh my!! I saw the matching large can at my sister's house today, along with an amazing red and white Big Valu Coffee can. Hmmm.

A few of the very favorites from my collection; in my laundry room on the Pottery Barn Kids shelf I scored at my moving sale from

my sister!! Vintage coffee cans, what can I say. Affordable, graphic, happy collection!! I have to part with this one due to space, so it will be in my booth at Funky Junk!!

Found these at The Vintage Rabbit, my longtime favorite in Spokane...I went in with posters for the show and came out with this big splurge!! I know the boys will love them for camping, and I love them period.

I am slowly, quietly building my vintage & retro salt and pepper shaker collection to house my building glitter collection...My junker/scrapping friends Jennifer Wood & Christy Dunham are years ahead of me with this idea-thanks girls!! I think it will be my favorite thing to search for at my show!

Love old crepe paper and love old crepe paper package design! This is part of my spring display. I wish I hadn't have sold my green package...and wish I would have bought the amazing crepe paper store display I found once upon a time!!!

Love this little guy; he was one of my very first finds, and I had a vintage squeaky toy display in each of my nursery's...but now my youngest is 2 and we are changing to little boy vintage, so wave bye-bye to me; hello to your new home cutie!

Bought from some of my all time Farm Chicks vendors, Forget-Me-Not Nancy & Sally, I think it is coming to Funky Junk to find a new home. Those girls always have THE BEST junk!!

Perfect blue three shelf vintage side table I bought from my mom at Funky Junk; just not sure if it fits in my new office, so it is going to Funky Junk!

My very first junky project, even before being a Farm Chicks vendor! This was a window from the old family farmhouse. Probably going in my office to stay.

So there are some of my junking funky finds, some recent, some recently unpacked. I am going through all of my treasures and deciding what I can fit in my new home, new design, new life and what I can pass on to someone else. Not always easy decisions, but as I just read, I can love everything I see, I just can't keep everything I love! Happy junking trails...

A little Irish

We all come from somewhere, from some mix of genes and nationalities that make up the who of who we are. I have tended to bond more closely to some parts of my geneology and family history than others; particularly the small portion of Irish in me. I think in my mind I've worked it out that I am 1/32nd "full" Irish. Who knows how close my math is, especially considering it is not my strongest subject. But how I do love that sliver.
So, we celebrate St. Patrick's Day at my house; especially since I named my sons all Irish names: Haden after my full-blooded great, great grandfather Thomas Haden; Liam because I just love that Irish name; and Finn, because I had a vision of that name shortly after Liam was born, and it came back to me when we were searching for a name for our third boy. Is it normal that my 1/64th part Irish boys think they are all Irish? All I'm sure of it that they carry the passion, humor and names of a land I've never seen but dream is my home.
